South Africa's young people face a difficult reality. Unemployment, limited access to practical skills, poverty, deteriorating infrastructure and social challenges continue to affect communities across the country. At the same time, thousands of talented and motivated young people are waiting for an opportunity to contribute.

At NXT GEN Foundation, we believe that potential should never go to waste.

We are a youth-driven organisation supported by mentorship, created to help bridge the gap between skills and opportunity, communities and development, and young people and meaningful economic participation.

Our Vision

Our vision is not simply to develop skills and watch talented young people leave their communities in search of opportunity elsewhere.

We want to retain, grow and multiply skills locally.

This means developing a strong youth leadership core, providing practical pathways into the economy, rebuilding confidence in our communities and bringing together youth, businesses, communities, investors and other stakeholders around a shared purpose.

Our goal is simple: turn potential into productivity and possibility into progress.

Introducing Project 40

One of our first major youth development initiatives is Project 40.

The programme was designed to identify motivated young people, understand their interests and strengths, provide practical skills development and give them opportunities to apply those skills in real-world environments.

The programme follows four key stages:

Intake: Identify, engage and assess young people before placing them into suitable development pathways.

Training: Provide structured workshops, practical learning and supervised training in areas such as plumbing, electrical work, administration and other valuable skills.

Projects: Give participants opportunities to apply what they have learned through real community projects, infrastructure improvements and refurbishment initiatives.

Leadership & Employment: Connect participants with internships and entry-level employment opportunities while developing strong performers into future mentors and youth leaders.

Project 40 is about much more than training. It is about creating a pathway from unemployment to skills, from skills to experience, and from experience to opportunity.

Building Communities Through Youth

We also believe young people should play an active role in solving the challenges around them.

Our intended initiatives extend beyond traditional training and include community-led urban solutions, entrepreneurship and digital skills, leadership development, environmental action, youth advocacy and practical community projects.

This includes exploring solutions for challenges within informal settlements, improving degraded spaces and infrastructure, supporting community projects and developing innovative tools through the NXT GEN Innovation Hub.

Instead of seeing young people only as beneficiaries of development, we want to position them as contributors to development.

We Cannot Do It Alone

Creating sustainable opportunities requires collaboration.

For our programmes to grow, young people need access to training spaces, internships, equipment, tools, materials, mentorship and financial support.

We are therefore calling on businesses, organisations, institutions, government bodies, community leaders and individuals who share our vision to join us.

A company may provide an internship. A supplier may contribute tools or materials. A partner may provide a training space. A sponsor may support a young person with transport, meals, equipment or a stipend.

Every contribution creates another opportunity for a young person to learn, participate and grow.
